What is Precocious Puberty?
Precocious Puberty refers that a child’s physical & hormonal signs of sexual maturity develop at an earlier age. Secretion of growth and sex hormones that begins to function too early, results in Precocious Puberty. Precocious Puberty age varies between 6 – 8.
In 90 – 95 percent of girls, the cause of Precocious Puberty is not known. In rare cases, Precocious Puberty may be caused by the abnormal central nervous system, tumors on the ovaries, pituitary glands or brain, adrenal gland disorders, genetic syndromes, family history of the disorder, hypothyroidism, and genetic syndromes. Signs of Precocious Puberty are the same as the signs of regular Puberty.
The Cause of Precocious Puberty depends on whether the child has Central Precocious Puberty or Peripheral Precocious Puberty.
Central Precocious Puberty
This category of puberty is Gonadotropin-dependent. Central Precocious Puberty is caused mainly due to the early secretion of gonadotropins. It may also happen due to the early maturity of pituitary glands, ovaries, and hypothalamus.
Peripheral Precocious Puberty
Peripheral Precocious Puberty is Gonadotropin-independent. It is caused due to the early secretion of sex hormones (oestrogen).
Diagnosing Precocious Puberty should be clinical. It can be diagnosed by Blood Tests, X-Ray and Ultrasound.
Blood Tests – It helps to measure the levels of various hormones as Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone, Oestrogen, and Thyroid Hormones.
X-Ray – It diagnoses whether the bone's maturity is too early. To find the age of the child’s bone, X-Rays of the Left Hand and Wrist can be taken.
Ultrasound – This test focuses on blood vessels and tissues. It helps to diagnose the early maturity of glands and ovaries.
Treatment should focus on preventing the later development of precocious puberty signs. Depending on the type of Precocious Puberty, treatment varies. For Central Precocious Puberty treatment may be done with synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone to stops the production of sex hormones. For Peripheral Precocious Puberty treatment should focus on curing tumors.
